Spotlight on CODA Youth
Rachel Feeley was selected to attend the Childrenís Congress. She will be working to raise awareness about Type 1 diabetes by telling her personal story. Rachel as well as 200 other children with Type 1 diabetes will urge lawmakers to increase funds to find a cure for diabetes. These representatives from all 50 states will assemble at Capital Hill on June 23-27, 2001. Read more about Rachel and the other kids at jdf.org/kids/index.html.

Family Symposium
The family symposium is an educational meeting for those youth living with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes and their family members. We will have speakers for informational sessions on such topics as living with diabetes, insulin pump basics and healthy eating habits. Vendors will be present for the latest updates in blood glucose monitoring devices and to provide information on insulin pumps. The symposium will take place at the Chemical Abstracts Services in the Battelle Room on Sept. 29, 2001. We look forward to seeing you there!

Check out the new and improved youth web pages. We are currently updating our youth website to offer such highlights as:

    The 411 on Diabetes -- This section will provide all kinds of general information about diabetes. Everything from the feelings of highs and lows , blood glucose monitoring, recipes, eating on the go and information for our youth with Type 2.

    Kids-N-School -- Discusses informing school officials and friends about you diabetes, and Participating in safely in sports.

    CHAT Room -- Offers chat sessions with diabetes experts and featured guests. Check out the schedule for times and topics.

    Post It! -- A board to leave messages for others living with diabetes.

    Game Zone -- Educational and fun games.

    Scrapbook--Provides information on the various camps, registration information for campers as well as staff and scrapbook pictures from past camps.

Recipe:

Strawberry ShakeBR>
1/2 cup skim milk
1/2 cup plain low-fat yogurt
1/2 cup cup frozen unsweetened whole strawberries
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 packet artificial sweetener (Equal)

Put all ingredients in a blender or food processor, blend until smooth and serve.

Yield: One 1 1/2-cup serving
Nutritive vales per serving: Cal. 106  CHO(gm) 19 PRO(gm) 8  FAT(gm) 2 1/2
Food exchanges per serving: 2/3 Fruit, 1 Milk, 1/2 Fat

CONGRATULATIONS
Each year the Womenís Board of the Central Ohio Diabetes Association (CODA) provides scholarships to students with Type 1 diabetes residing in the Central Ohio region. Eligibility for the scholarships is dependent upon the studentsí financial need, their demonstration of exemplary adjustments to living with diabetes and their interest in helping others through involvement in CODA or other human service activities.

The following are this year's $1000 scholarship recipients:

  • Laura Bailey who will be attending Capital University. Majoring in pre-med/biology. Laura has been a volunteer at Childrenís Hospital and she has attended Camp Hamwi.
  • Kyle Donley plans to attend Miami University and study in the field of Microbiology. Kyle has been a participant in the Cancer Society Walk for Life and the Swim for Diabetes.
  • Jennifer Nicol plans on attending Ohio State University and study Nursing. Jenniferís volunteer efforts include the JDF Walk for the Cure, ADAís Ohio Youth Leadership, CODAís Swim for Diabetes, Camp Hamwi, and she is a board member of CODAís Union County Chapter.
  • Amanda Sturgill will be attending MedCentral College of Nursing. Amanda has organized diabetes screening and education for senior citizens. She has also volunteered at food and clothing pantries and drives and has attended Camp Hamwi.

This year we had a special grant that was awarded to Safia Abdullah who will be attending Columbus Community College. Safia is a Somali Community Volunteer Outreach Worker and works for the Somali Community Diabetes Education Outreach Program.
