The fall season provides many opportunities for the Central Ohio Diabetes Association, an agency of LifeCare Alliance to raise diabetes awareness, promote detection and educate the public on diabetes during November (National Diabetes Awareness Month).

More than 415 million people in the world have diabetes, a figure that is projected to rise to 642 million in 2040, if people at risk do not start making some lifestyle changes. Complications from diabetes caused almost 5 million deaths, which included the startling global statistic of a person dying every 7 seconds from diabetes. This metabolic syndrome is responsible for more than $673 Billion in US Healthcare costs and in 2013 over 79,000 children developed Type 1 Diabetes.

The International Diabetes Federation recognizes November 14, as World Diabetes Day, where a number of monuments and buildings will light up blue on that day to raise awareness of diabetes, celebrate World Diabetes Day and serve as beacons of hope for the millions of people worldwide living with diabetes. The theme of World Diabetes Day 2017 is Women and diabetes - our right to a healthy future.

The Central Ohio Diabetes Association will host a number of events the community can take advantage of starting with activities during November including diabetes education programs at our 1100 Dennison Ave office.

Free blood sugar testing is available from 8:30 am to 5 pm at the CODA office during the month of November. Call 614-884-4400 to register for any of the events or visit www.diabetesohio.org for more information.
